Florida’s Fight Against Illegal Gambling: Operation Sunset Stakes Hits Southwest Florida

The crackdown on illegal gambling in the Sunshine State is intensifying. This week, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the results of “Operation Sunset Stakes,” a multi-day enforcement action that has dealt a significant blow to unlicensed gaming enterprises in Lee and Collier counties.

The operation serves as a stark reminder that Florida law enforcement is maintaining an aggressive, year-round strategy to dismantle unregulated gambling rings that officials say are often fronts for larger criminal networks.

The Results of Operation Sunset Stakes

The multi-agency effort, which involved the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) and local sheriffs’ offices, produced significant results:

  • Seized Hardware: 479 unlicensed and unregulated gambling machines were confiscated.

  • Cash Seized: Law enforcement secured $294,150 in illicit proceeds.

  • Arrests: 11 individuals were taken into custody.

These figures add to an already busy 2026 for the state. Since the start of the year, Attorney General Uthmeier and the FGCC have led a statewide initiative that has removed more than 3,100 illegal machines from circulation, seized over $1.7 million in cash, and resulted in 81 arrests.

More Than Just a Game

During a media briefing in Naples, Attorney General Uthmeier emphasized that these operations are rarely harmless.

“Illegal gambling operations pose a threat to public safety and undermine our compact with the Seminole Tribe… These illegal casinos fuel larger criminal enterprises that contribute to drug and human trafficking.”

Beyond the criminal connections, officials warn that these “arcades”—often tucked away in neighborhoods popular with seniors—lack even the most basic consumer protections. Without oversight, players have no guarantee of fair play or recourse if their money is stolen.

FGCC Chair Julie Brown reinforced this message, noting that these operations are designed to exploit communities, not provide entertainment.

The Path Forward: A Call for Stricter Penalties

Despite the successes of recent raids, state officials say they are fighting an uphill battle due to current state law. Many operators of these illegal arcades currently face only misdemeanor charges—a penalty that many view as a “cost of doing business” rather than a true deterrent.

Attorney General Uthmeier continues to urge the Florida Legislature to toughen the criminal code. The goal is to classify illegal gambling operations as felonies, ensuring that those who profit from these schemes face consequences that reflect the severity of the associated criminal activity.

As the state prepares for future legislative sessions, the message from the Attorney General’s office remains clear: they intend to continue these raids until every illegal gambling operation is shut down. Furthermore, the state has expanded its reach beyond physical locations, recently issuing cease-and-desist notices to major payment processors, warning them against facilitating transactions for illegal online gambling sites.
