Two employees at a local Anderson County convenience store are facing serious charges following an investigation into lottery fraud. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced this week that the individuals were arrested after allegedly orchestrating a scheme to defraud the South Carolina Education Lottery.

The Charges

The investigation centers on incidents occurring at the Stop-A-Minit location on Abbeville Highway. Authorities have identified the two suspects as follows:

  • Eric Thomas Brown, Jr. (25): Faces multiple charges, including intent to defraud, possession of counterfeit game tickets, and conspiracy to defraud the South Carolina Education Lottery. He was taken into custody on Monday.

  • Kayla Marie Madden (37): Was charged with conspiracy to defraud the South Carolina Education Lottery. Her arrest occurred on July 8.

Details of the Investigation

According to official arrest warrants, the fraud took place on May 30 and June 4, 2026. Investigators allege that Brown and Madden passed numerous stolen scratch-off tickets without providing payment.

The illicit activity was uncovered after the duo was captured on the store’s surveillance footage. Additionally, other staff members at the location were able to identify the suspects, assisting SLED in building their case.

This is an ongoing investigation. As more information becomes available regarding the legal proceedings, we will provide updates.
