DETROIT, MI — The streets are talking, and the verdict is in: People are furious. A Texas man who turned a night of celebration into a bloody nightmare outside the MGM Grand Detroit has officially avoided behind-the-bars prison time.
In a move that has the victims—and the public—questioning the justice system, William Wilson of Fort Worth was sentenced this week to just two years’ probation.
The Attack: “Haymakers” and Homophobia
The incident went down in the early hours of July 13, 2025. What started as a 30th birthday celebration for Chelsi Way ended with her fiancée, Celia Haueter, unconscious on the pavement.
Witnesses say Wilson approached the group at the valet, hurled homophobic slurs, and then unleashed a “savage” beating. Haueter was punched so hard she needed 30 stitches to her face. Her brother, David Supal, had to throw his own body over her to stop the “haymakers” Wilson was throwing while she lay helpless on the ground.
The Legal Loophole
Wilson originally faced a mountain of charges, including felony assault with intent to do great bodily harm and four counts of hate crime. He was looking at five years in the pen.
Instead, he took a plea deal in January, copping to just one count of hate crime causing bodily injury. The result? No jail. Just probation.
Where Was Security?
The drama doesn’t stop with the court’s decision. The victims are calling out MGM Grand Detroit, claiming security stood by while the blood was being spilled. While MGM records show security arrived within a minute to provide medical aid, the victims feel the intervention should have happened before the 30 stitches were necessary.
