Wyandanch Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Casino Parking Lot Shooting at Jake’s 58

A Night at the Casino Turned Into a Near-Fatal Ambush

What started as a routine trip to the casino nearly ended in tragedy.

A Wyandanch man who shot another man twice outside Jake’s 58 Casino has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for a violent attack that prosecutors described as a brazen act of public violence.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, 26-year-old Nashawn J. Legros was sentenced to 10 years in state prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, after pleading guilty to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

The shooting occurred on the night of May 31, 2024, in the parking lot of Jake’s 58 Casino in Islandia, New York.

The Attack Outside Jake’s 58

Court records show that around 10:16 p.m., the victim was walking through the casino parking lot on his way inside when Legros allegedly opened fire.

Two shots struck the victim.

Despite suffering devastating injuries, the victim managed to get up and make his way inside the casino with assistance before collapsing.

Investigators say Legros immediately fled the scene in a vehicle and later abandoned that vehicle in Central Islip.

The victim’s injuries were severe.

One bullet entered his chest and traveled through his body, damaging multiple organs including his intestines, colon, and diaphragm. Surgeons reportedly used more than 40 staples during emergency procedures to repair the internal damage.

Doctors later performed additional procedures to remove fluid around the victim’s heart and lungs.

Authorities say one bullet remains lodged in the victim’s pelvic bone.

Guilty Plea Leads to Prison Sentence

On February 25, 2026, Legros pleaded guilty before Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro.

His plea included:

  • Attempted Murder in the Second Degree
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree

Both charges are classified as violent felonies under New York law.

On June 8, 2026, the court imposed a sentence of 10 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.

Prosecutors Send a Message

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney emphasized that violence in public spaces will not be tolerated.

“This brazen act of violence has no place in Suffolk County,” Tierney said in a statement. “My office is committed to holding violent offenders accountable.”

The District Attorney noted that the sentence reflects the seriousness of carrying out a shooting in a crowded public area where innocent bystanders could have easily been caught in the violence.

The Bigger Picture

Casinos are often associated with entertainment, nightlife, and high-stakes gambling.

But incidents like this serve as a reminder that violence can erupt anywhere when personal disputes escalate.

The fact that the victim survived after suffering two gunshot wounds is remarkable. Medical professionals performed multiple life-saving procedures, and investigators quickly worked to identify and apprehend the shooter.

The case also highlights the extensive surveillance, investigative resources, and law enforcement coordination often involved when violent crimes occur around gaming properties.

HamptonINT Take

Most people think the biggest risk around casinos is losing money.

Stories like this remind us that sometimes the dangers extend far beyond the gaming floor.

What should have been an ordinary night at Jake’s 58 became a life-changing event for everyone involved.

One man is fortunate to be alive.

Another will spend the next decade in prison.

And a split-second decision will impact both families for years to come.
